The Lyckebyån is classified as a particularly valuable waterway due to its cultural and historical value. Its location with the naval town of Karlskrona made the river a very important waterway further back. The Lyckebyån has formed the border between Denmark and Sweden. The stretch is varied with forests, crops and urban surroundings. The water is relatively dark in color, which is due to humus supply from areas upstream in the system. In the lower part towards the mouth, boat traffic is extensive. From Lyckeby down to the mouth, there are a large number of boating places where boats are moored. Much of the fishing is focused on the lower stretch, from Lyckeby down to the mouth. The proximity of the city and the easily accessible fishing attract many people and in this way the river is a valuable resource for the city's residents as well as in terms of health aspects. Many people move along the river. On the stretches further upstream, trout thrive where the biotopes are more currenty. There is a popular hiking trail along the river.
The river has high natural values and is also drinking water. The river has many different types of environments, from calm coastal estuaries to rapids with trout and freshwater pearl mussels.
